Priya Ragu
Debut album ‘Santhosam’ is the culmination of a journey that has been a lifetime in the making. Priya’s parents fled the Sri Lankan civil war in the 1980s, instead establishing a new home in St. Gallen, Switzerland. They always ensured that Priya and Japhna Gold remained in tune with the sounds of their Tamil family culture, often hosting jam sessions at home in which everyone present would sing songs made famous by the Kollywood film industry.
Despite this rich musical upbringing, Priya’s parents didn’t quite understand her fiery ambition to pursue music as a career – in the tradition of Tamil culture, they wanted their daughter to get a good job and then get married. And so Priya partitioned her life: in secret she practised at pop stardom and for her parents she got a job working for a Swiss airline. In 2017, however, she up-ended her life and relocated to New York for six months where she began working remotely with her brother, who was still in Switzerland, on music. That would ultimately lead to her remarkable breakthrough – a wealth of acclaim, extensive
Radio 1 support and a show-stealing debut TV performance on ‘Later… with Jools Holland’ – right through to the release of her critically acclaimed debut mixtape ‘damnshestamil’.
Her acclaimed live performances have previously included sold-out headline shows in London, New York and Los Angeles, gigs as special guest to Jungle, and festivals as varied as SXSW, Primavera and the Montreux Jazz Festival.
